The 8 secrets of people who never get sick
You might feel a little jealousy towards people who manage to stay healthy even when everyone around them is sneezing and coughing. You may be wondering what it is they are doing that you’re not to keep yourself healthy and from getting sick. I am part of those people and I’m going to tell you all my secrets for a healthier life.
1. Sleep well
Sleep plays an important role in physical health. Indeed, it is an effective way of preventing sickness as you need to rest for your mind and body to be well. It is a must that you get a good night — an average of seven to eight hours per night is more than enough. This will decrease your chance to get sick as a good sleeping schedule can improve your productivity and your concentration throughout the day. It also helps your brain to function properly. On the other hand, sleep deprivation increases the risks of obesity, heart diseases, diabetes, strokes and so on. Having a good night maximizes athletic performance. More importantly, sleeping well is very important as it improves your immune system.
2. Drink lots of water
Did you know? The human body loses on a daily average 2 to 2.5l of fluid through breathing, digestion, sweat and urination? The healthiest option to prevent that is replacing refined snacks and sweet beverages such as coke by a glass full of room temperature water. Do not forget that water is the main constituent of cells, tissues and organs in our body which is made up of 60% of water. Try to drink a lot of it, 1 to 1.5l per day. You will notice changes in your body such as tighter and brighter skin for instance!
3. Working out and exercising daily
Your body is a temple that should be always taken care of, this means that you should practice a physical activity as often as you can. Five times per week is the ideal amount. Try to exercise daily at the gym or if you don’t have time or the financial ressources to sign up there, invest in a good pair of running shoes, download a running app to keep track of the distance you ran/walked and go get some fresh air. This will only be beneficial to your body in the long term.
4. Learn how to deal with stress
Stress can affect your body. If you push yourself too much, you will be reaching your breaking point: a certain limit beyond which your body won’t be able to follow because of the lack of attention you’ve given it when there were clear signs. This will result in stress which will also cause sickness. That’s the reason why you need to learn how to manage stress and anxiety. These hormones weaken your immune system and reduce your body’s response to foreign invaders. People under chronic stress are more susceptible to viral illnesses, as well as other infections.
5. Eat well Duh!
Eating healthy is a part of it all. You have to eat a lot of vegetables and fruits in order to get a strong body. Stop eating fast food all the time, instead, cook your own food. I’m not talking about eating leafy greens like rabbits but some people say the more you eat garlic and ginger, the less you will get sick, just try it. As one once said, « one apple a day keeps the doctor away ».
6. Limit non-useful medicine
You might have noticed that when you are often taking the same medicine, your body gets used to it and the medicine works less effectively. You should limit the usage of medicine as much as you can, and try to take as little medicine as possible. The less you’re taking it, the more you’re body will thank you by getting stronger. However if you feel like you’re on the verge of dying, you should consider taking something powerful that will immediately act where you’re aching.
7. Cover up
Of course winter is that time of the year where one looks less fashionable than the rest of the time but this might not come up as a surprise to you : one needs to cover up in order to avoid catching a cold. Beanies, warms scarfs and gloves are winter essentials everyone should have.
8. Hygiene
It is a must that you cover up during winter but it is even more important that you keep a good hygiene during the 365 days of the year. Wash your hands after using the bathroom, have some anti-bacterial gel in your purse for those times you hold onto things in places such as public transportations or public bathrooms. Sneeze in the crook of your arm, blow your nose in a tissue and don’t forget to throw it out right after, then of course wash you hands.
To conclude, eat well and sleep well. This is not a legend. If you’re taking care of yourself, of your body, you will not get sick all the time. Personally this year I got sick only one time, and it was a virus that spread throughout my school. These were all the steps I’m following in order to avoid sickness.
